What is a Z counter on a cash register?
When you use a cash register in your business it has tools built into it to keep your money secure, many people don't know this. The cash register was invented to stop pilfering from happening by a bar owner in Ohio who suspected he was being stolen from by employees.
A couple simple and overlooked tools a cash register provides for support are as follows: The Non-Resettable Grand Totals and the Z counters. These are both very much like an odometer in a car. They simple count how much was ever sold through this cash register and how many Z reports have been taken. Why are these items important you might ask? That is an excellent question.
First you must have a strict rule that receipts must be given for a sale, the cash drawer should be closed in order to make a sale, and remove the no sale key feature from the register. All of this make it much more difficult for a cashier to fake ringing up a sale and pocketing the money. If you make it easier for a cashier to help themselves to money chances are those tempted are going to.
After you have made it more difficult to fake ringing up a sale pay attention to the Z counter on your end of day Z reports. They should only count by 1 for each Z taken. For an example lets say the z counter has been counting by two instead of one. This is an indication that the register has been Z'd out without your knowledge and you never received the report. OK so you may be thinking yah so what just more paperwork for me and my employees would never steal right, they are like family. Well a Z counter counting by two means that they are running part of their shift, Z'ing out the register and keeping all of the money. Then they operate like normal for the rest of the day.
I have seen this happen dozens of times with my own eyes while helping clients figure out where their money has been going, why their sales have been dropping etc.
If you are lucky enough to stay in the retail or restaurant business long enough it is not a matter of if but rather when you are stolen from.
If you need help selecting the right cash register to keep your business more secure then please call us at 1-800-863-2274

A good cash register for fireworks stand
The SAM4s ER-285M is a great cash register for firework stand especially when you pair it with an Mbox credit card interface. The ER-285M can be equipped with a bar code scanner as well as the credit card interface. This will allow you to pre-program all of your fireworks into the cash register for speed and accuracy. Combine that with the Mbox credit card interface which is wireless and supports multiple cash registers. When you attach the Mbox you make transactions even faster and with fewer or no errors.
If you have questions about this solution please give us a call 1-800-863-2274

POS inventory control system vs. a cash register
We are often told by customers looking for a cash register that they want inventory control. After hearing this we must really dive into what does inventory control mean to that person? To some it is true inventory control where the POS is tracking how many of one item you have sold, you have entered a beginning stock, you have entered on-going purchases of stock and taken a physical inventory and the system can tell you at any given time how many of that item you have on the shelf and how many you need to order and from whom. I know that was a long winded answer, however to some when they claim they want inventory control they really mean they wish to have a sales report of how many of one item they have sold over a period of time. There is a huge difference in the two ideas of inventory control.
If you are looking for true inventory control as described in my first example than a cash register is probably not for you. You would be better served with a software based POS system with inventory control. Now having said that does that mean a cash register can't do inventory control? No in fact many cash registers include a stock keeping report, however when we get down to the real world of operating a POS inventory control system you will find cash registers are to labor intensive and your cost of doing the work may outweigh the benefit. I have seen it over and over in my years in the cash register and POS industry. We have also had to fix many situations where a sales person (not ours) told a client of yah, this cash register can do full inventory control and they sell the client a bill of goods. Yes in theory it may work but in the real world unless you only have a handful of items it is not going to work.
If you need true inventory control then do yourself a favor and look at a software based POS inventory control system such as the Keystroke POS system. A computer based POS system integrates all the movement of inventory in your store. A true POS system allows you to create automatic inventory purchase orders, allows you to receive and edit inventory by accepting purchase orders into the system and of course the items you sell are automatically deducted from you inventory.
When set up correctly you will be able to go into you inventory control POS system and generate a report of what you need to buy from your vendors, or create a shrink report in a matter of seconds or maybe print shelf tags.
I could go on all day regarding the differences and benefits of both types of systems. If you would like to discuss which system would work better for you please give us a call at 1-800-863-2274 we are located in Seattle however we sell and install Keystroke POS and cash registers all over North America

Age Verification makes the SAM4s SPS-500 series the perfect liquor store cash register
The SAM4s SPS-500 series includes a feature for age verification by swiping the drivers license on the cash register magnetic card reader. Many state drivers licenses encode driver data on a mag stripe. When age entry is required, the drivers license can be swiped and the age verified. This feature is enabled by identifying track data on the Age Verification program screen. (California support added at V1.00m). All of the SAM4s SPS-500 series cash register include this feature. Of course you will need to add the integrated magnetic card reader to the register and your state must have ID's capable.
For a liquor store you would want a SAM4s SPS-520R which has a raised keyboard and a receipt and journal printer. If you don't require a receipt then you could use the SPS-530R cash register which is about a $100.00 less.
For a bar/lounge/club you would probably want the SAM4s SPS-520F which has a flat keyboard designed for food and beverage operations. If you don't need a receipt then you could use the SPS-530F which is the same machine with receipt only.
All of these cash registers work with the Datacap Twin Tran for credit card interface and gift card interface. All can use bar code scanners, kitchen printers, computer interfaces etc.
If you have a question regarding which machine would work well for you call us at 1-800-863-2274 We are located in the Seattle Tacoma area however we sell cash registers all over North America

Cash Registers with touch screens
There are two cash registers with touch screens on the market. First there is the Sharp UP-820F cash register which is a fine machine. The second one and the most popular is the SAM4s SPS-500 series of cash registers with touch screens.
Cash registers with touch screens make the best of both worlds. The traditional cash register can be much faster then a touch screen however the touch screen can be more intuitive and often easier to program and use. Combining the two makes a lot of sense and has been a big hit.

Cash registers that take credit cards

Using a cash register that takes credit cards also reduces your risk for cashiers committing credit card fraud or stealing from you which would have gone unnoticed before. SAM4s makes the best cash registers on the North American Market
SAM4s makes the best cash registers on the US and Canadian market today. Many people think they are Samsung and while there is a connection they are not one in the same. SAM4s is a brand name of cash registers made by SHIN-HEUNG PRECISION CO., LTD. (SHC)who was the OEM manufacturer of Samsung cash registers. In 2001 Samsung left the cash register business and SHC was able to buy the cash register business from Samsung. SHC then began to offer the cash registers under there own brand name of SAM4s and the rest is history.
SAM4s has never looked back since their beginning in the North American Market. They changed the game with the SAM4s ER-650 but did not stop, next they brought us the SPS-2000 followed by the SPS-500 series and now they are bring the Tabby to market!
If you have questions about SAM4s give us a call at 1-800-863-2274

Restaurant POS systems in Seattle
At NBS, Inc. you will find that we offer you a choice of different POS systems rather then a one size fits all approach. We are the only Restaurant POS dealer in Seattle with several different point of sale system to chose from.
We offer everything from simple cash registers for restaurants to two different iPad systems for restaurants and the traditional Windows touch screen POS systems. Our restaurant POS systems start at $1100.00 and go up from there in both price and features.
What we have found is restaurant owners will often visit a restaurant POS dealer and are offered one system because the Micros dealer sell the Micros system and the Dinerware dealer sells only Dinerware. We offer five different restaurant POS systems. We have sold many of the smaller systems from SAM4s where the restaurant owner did not want to invest 20K in a system but rather buy enough system to get the job done. Other dealers only have the expensive systems where we have the wide range to select from.
Another important aspect of doing business with us is that we have been installing and supporting POS systems in Washington State since 1972 and we have seen many systems come and go.
If you are looking for a POS system in the Seattle Tacoma area give us a call at 1-800-863-2274 and we will come to you or you can come to our office and check out all of our restaurant point of sale systems and see which is the right one for you.
